View of An East Coast Port Facility
Mariners from third world countries consider themselves fortunate to have a job aboard a cargo or similar ship. To them it's a chance to earn as much as $300 a month! To us that's not alot but to them it takes care of many family needs. While many are Christian just as many are not. Countries like China that send ships here have state sponsored religions so sailors visiting here get access to honest information. They get the truth...from the Bible in the Word written in their own language!
We let them know that there are Seaman Centers at every port to assist them with calling cards to contact their families, Internet service, game rooms for safe fellowship and other help as needed.
As a covering organization we strive to strengthen existing port ministries where they are weak.
Various port ministries are in place around the country to help address the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of these visitors. Port Chaplains board every vessel and visit the crew. Visits are short. Some mariners are allowed off ship and others are not. Ship board visits allow the Chaplain to minister, counsel, secure medical assistance and offer recreational activity at or near the port and follow up with or refer sailors to other chaplains in their next port of call for additional help as needed.
